Family-Fun Activities in the Twin Cities this Spring

Now that the frost has thawed and the flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, as we cue baby Bambi to emerge from the forest… You get the idea, the sun is shining, our winter hibernation period is ending, and it’s time to get out there and see the world again! Here are some fun ideas for grabbing our family and leaving our couches to explore the Twin Cities.
  1. Get out and enjoy nature! Get some fresh air and have some family fun at Minnehaha Falls Park. Take a hike around the beautiful limestone bluffs, river overlook and a 53-foot waterfall. Pack a picnic, explore the wading pool, play frisbee golf, or go for a bike ride. Just enjoy being outside together.
  2. Let’s see some animals! Check out the century-old Como Park Zoo and Conservatory with the family. Wander around the beautiful flowers and see some animals at this free admission zoo. Not only is there a conservatory to explore different plants and an animal-filled zoo, there is also the Tropical Encounters, a carousel, visitor’s center and gift shops. Travel + Leisure magazine recently described Como as “ a true urban gem, that is half the size of New York City’s Central Park, but with more to see”.
  3. Take them out to the ball game! Grab the kiddos and pack your baseball gloves and hats and head out to Target Field for a springtime game of watching the Minnesota Twins play ball! Fill up on hot dogs, popcorn, and cotton candy (or any number of wonderful offerings) while you watch America’s past-time on a sunny afternoon. On Sundays they offer for kids under 14 to run the bases after the game.
  4. Learn something new! Plan a fun family outing to the Science Museum of Minnesota. Explore their exhibits on dinosaurs and fossils, the human body, the Mississippi River, sports, their experiments gallery and their rotating traveling exhibits. They also offer an OmniTheater to watch a dome-shaped movie! While you’re out and about flexing your learning muscles, stop by the Minnesota Children’s Museum. This one offers three floors of fun for the younger kids, with things like Storyland, multi-story climbing playplace, giant building blocks, and playing in your own space adventure! Take in the view of the city on their terrace now that the weather is warmer, look through their giant kaleidoscope, paint with brushes and water, and explore the sensory garden (they have more outdoor space in their Backyard Garden play area.
These are just a few ideas of the fun things that the Twin Cities holds for our families to do this Spring. Check out one of the places we’ve listed above, or share with us what your favorite family activity is in the Twin Cities!
