Top 7 Summer Plumbing Problems (and How to Prevent Them)

Summer brings sunshine, barbecues, and vacations—but it can also bring unexpected plumbing problems if you're not prepared. The warmer months often mean more water usage, increased activity around the house, and seasonal risks that can cause clogs, leaks, or even water damage.

Here are the top 7 summer plumbing problems we see every year—and tips on how to keep them from spoiling your summer.

1. Clogged Garbage Disposals
Summer cookouts often mean greasy foods, fruit rinds, corn husks, and bones—all of which are tough on your disposal and can lead to clogs or burnt-out motors.
  • Avoid putting fibrous, greasy, or hard materials down the drain
  • Run cold water before and after using the disposal
  • Consider composting fruit and veggie scraps instead
2. Overloaded Washing Machines
Between swimsuits, towels, and kids playing outside, your washer works overtime in the summer. This can lead to drain line clogs or worn-out hoses. Don't overload your washer! Check the hoses for cracks and buldges and consider spacing out loads to reduce stress on the system.
3. Sump Pump Failures
Heavy summer rainstorms can overwhelm your sump pump and lead to basement flooding if it’s not working properly. It's important to test your sump pump monthly and clean debris from the discharge pipe. You can also consider a battery backup system in case of power outages. *
4. Outdoor Faucet and Hose Leaks
Frozen pipes from winter can lead to cracked hose bibs or leaking outdoor faucets once summer hits. Inspect your faucests and hoses early in the season. Check for drips while the hose is running! Make sure to replace any worn-out washers or connections
5. Sewer Line Backups
Tree roots seek out moisture and can grow into sewer lines, causing blockages. Increased summer water use can also overwhelm aging or damaged pipes. You can schedule a sewer line inspection if you notice slow drains but always avoid planting trees near lines.
6. Slow Drains from Hair and Sand
More showers after pool time or beach visits can lead to buildup of sand, sunscreen, and hair in drains.
  • Rinse off outside before using the shower
  • Use hair catchers in tub drains
  • Flush drains with baking soda and vinegar monthly
7. Water Heater StrainSummer doesn’t mean your water heater gets a break—especially with guests or kids home from school.
  • Set your water heater to 120°F to prevent overheating
  • Flush your water heater to remove sediment buildup*
  • If your unit is over 10 years old, consider a replacement or inspection
