5 Reasons for Your Home's Low Water Pressure

You get up in the morning and you’re all ready for a nice hot shower to help energize you and get you going for your day. You turn on the faucet, and the strength of the water is not quite what it used to be... Your water pressure is suddenly low. But what could be the cause? If the water pressure is only low for a certain period of time, then it could be a water supplier issue. Call your water service supplier and see if there is work being done and that might be a cause for your temporary low water pressure. If this isn’t the case, the following reasons could be the culprit.

  1. If the water pressure is low in a single faucet, it’s likely the aerator. This is the screen that is on the front of the faucet. It might be clogged with rust or debris, causing the low flow of water. Try cleaning and reattaching the aerator, but sometimes a replacement may be required.
  2. The low pressure could be caused by the pressure regulator that controls the water coming into your home from your service line. A broken regulator can affect the whole home’s water pressure. So if the entire plumbing system is giving low water pressure, then you will want to give a plumber a call to check out your pressure regulator.
  3. Another reason for the whole home to have low water pressure is your shut-off valve. Located where the main water pipe enters your home, you will find a wheel or lever. If it is not all the way open, then this can be your cause of low water pressure. Make sure the lever handle is parallel to the pipe, and if you have a wheel, that it is twisted completely open.
  4. If you have hard water, there is a possibility that you could have mineral deposits built up in your plumbing or hot water heater. There could be blocked or corroded pipes due to the sediment, which can be more common in older homes. A licensed plumber can inspect your pipes and hot water heater to help get your water moving again!
  5. A much more serious cause of low water pressure, might be a cracked or leaking pipe. This could be occurring at any point in the plumbing throughout your home, causing even more water damage. Again, calling a plumber to locate the issue is a good idea.
