In a plumbing emergency, the first thing you should do is turn off the water. It's crucial to know where your main water shutoff valve is, as well as the shutoffs for each of your home's particular appliances. If the problem is limited to a single fixture, such as your sinks or toilets, you can halt the flow by turning the valve clockwise. Turning the main valve clockwise will shut off water flow to your entire property if the problem cannot be identified or if you just want to be safe.
